There’s the battle of the cell phones: iPhone and iPhone 4G vs. Droid and Droid X. Then there’s the battle of Monsters vs. Aliens (and, of course, the battle between the 3D and regular HD versions). There’s even the battle of cosmetics, Mary Kay vs. Victoria’s Secret.
Finally, there’s the battle between Berryz Kobo and °C-ute, the battle for young idol-music superiority, waged on a fateful day in April 2008 at none other than the legendary Yokohama Arena.
It was quite a battle. I thought °C-ute won, but many thought Berryz prevailed. Odds appeared even; both Berryz and °C-ute had seven members. Berryz seemed to have been slightly superior on the music side, while C-ute was by far the more athletic with more upbeat tunes (yes, “Jump!” was in there, above a combined perf by both groups).
There was also the intriguing sideshow (with mini-movie, above, at the start and a staged play at the end of the concert) pitting the “battling” factions against this brutal aerial alien. Was there any deeper, hidden meaning? There’s more on this historic “battle” here, on sister blog archive Radreview.
Clearly, the “Battle Concert” was more hype than substance, but one thing is certain: It was a magnificent display of music-and-dance talent on a grand scale; an epic show that will likelu never be duplicated, now that Hello! Project has abandoned the big arenas in favor of smaller theatrical venues since January 2009.
But, for one magic day and night in April 2008 (both groups actually did the show an incredible three times in a single day), everyone forgot about the cell phones, HDTVs and DVDs and just enjoyed an astonishing show.
