Morning Musume, Berryz, °C-ute ‘try harder’

Maimi, left, and Chisato exchange moods during °C-ute’s Spring 2010 show.

It came as a simple revelation on another blog when someone commented on why it appears young Japanese idol-music stars are just “better” than kids in the States. More prolific. More able to perform more often, with more vigor, less complaining, for a lot less money than anyone in the U.S.

Hello! Project in ‘Honey Pie,’ winter 2010.

There was this comparison of U.S. teen star Miley Cyrus, a.k.a. Hannah Montana, to Hello! Project, a post that has received three or four times more hits and reads than anything I’ve ever published.

Basically, the question becomes: Are American kids just lazier? Do they have to fit the mold of, say, Li’l Bow Wow or Michael Jackson, moody and glum most of the time, surfacing every so often to perform, then slink back to their hotel suites and limos?

‘Bomb Girl,’ Hello! Project, Winter 2010 opening.

Look at any offstage footage of Berryz Kobo, °C-ute, Morning Musume or even AKB48. Those girls are going full throttle, juggling a school and family schedule that would stop a clock. But they do it.

So, yes, the Japanese idol groups “do try harder.” But even more important, they’re simply better — more talented and less inclined to let down their fans.

That is the way it should be, all around the world, in the music industry. May the power of Japanese girls catch on in this hemisphere as well.

This is Rad♂ signing off — for now.
